Beauty Starts With Healthy Diet

Skin reflects our total body health revealing a beautiful glow or dry patchy areas.  Diet has a huge impact on the appearance of skin and how well it heals its self after a cut or injury.  Individuals that lack enough water beneath the surface of their epidermis layer, to make it supple and soft looks dehydrated and dry.  If a person is not drinking adequate water during the day a person’s outer tissues become scaly, rough and wrinkled.  Its other functions are isolating us from environmental damage, sensation, temperature regulation in the body and the production of vitamin D folates.

Covering the outer layer of the vertebrates also protecting the integumentary system responsible for protecting the skin from various damage such as loss of water or abrasion.  The system comprises of skin and its appendages including, nails, and hair showing the importance of following a good diet.  It serves to protect the bodies deeper tissue, excrete waste through perspiration, and regulate the bodies temperature.  Sensory receptors within the surface of the skin detect pressure, pain, temperature changes and sensation.  Synthesis of vitamin D can be completed with the integumentary system with significant exposure to natural sunlight although most individuals are lacking.

The top layer of the skin epithelial cells serves to protect the skin and absorb vital nutrients from the diet and homeostasis the regulation of the bodies temperature.

Nearly everyone has occasional dry skin mostly due to poor diet, medications or lack of proper hydration, but becomes more common with age due to oil glands beneath the skin becoming less active.  Less oil in skin appearance changes due to the evaporation of water.  Most often the areas that are affected are the sides of arms, abdomen, and legs.

With less oil in the epidermis, moisture evaporates at a faster rate leaving tissue to look and feel depleted.  The dermis is the middle layer of the skin composed of irregular connective tissue collagen combined with elastic referred to as areolar connective tissue all arranged in bundle defused pattern. The dermal layer provides a site for blood vessel endings and nerves.  The dermis has two layers.  One being reticular layer is the deep layer of the dermis consisting of dense irregular tissue.  The second layer of the dermis called the papillary surface layer consists of areolar tissue

These layers are responsible for allowing the integument of the skin to conform with flexibility while resisting sagging, wrinkling, and distortions.

Dry Skin Causes and Prevention

Apart from typical aging often environmental and seasonal allergies are responsible for dry skin.  Neglecting a proper diet can also be to blame.  Dry epidermis during the cold winter months is usually due to exposure to dry indoor heat that pulls water out of the skin leaving rough dry patches on face legs and arms.  During summer outdoor heat or too much exposure to the sun for long periods of time can also be damaging.

Some sun exposure is good for developing vitamin D for the body.  Usually,  a 20 dally exposure to the sun is recommended.  If you are exposed to the sun for longer than 20 minutes it is recommended to use sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn

If you experience sunburn uses an aloe vera gel to soothe the burn.  If you experience sunburn with a fever blisters or swelling consult with a physician for more treatment options.

Dry skin symptom is also an indicator ailment such as rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, lymphoma, dermatitis, thyroid and parathyroid disorders.  It can also be a side effect of medications, such as topical lotions and creams or topical retinol acid typically used to treat acne.  If you are experiencing symptoms of dry skin see your doctor for a complete physical.

Who is At Risk of Dry Skin?

  • Poor diet
  • Hot showers and baths
  • Exposure to too much dry air, sundry heat
  • Alkaline soap
  • dehydrated not drinking enough pure water
  • medications steroids, anti-inflammatory medications, acne treatments using retinol acid

The health of your collagen determines the contour of your skin and the elasticity showing fine lines or wrinkles.  Studies show that dermal collagen decreases 1% per year after the ripe old age of twenty.  Ageing of the epidermis occurs when the collagen becomes hard and cross-linked with neighboring collagen fibers.  This process prevents it from retaining water and plumping up to look fuller.  Instead, it collapses on its self-binding with other collagen fibers and forms a new structure beneath the surface of the skin in a fishnet layer.

The cause of this cross-link formation in the dermis is due to free radical formation also known as oxidation.  The theory of aging (FRTA) states that organisms age due to cells accumulating free radicals and damage over time.  Most people perceive this as wrinkling skin, however, the true cause of crosslink is oxidation or free radical formation.  Free radicals attack cells collagen membranes cell proteins and cellular genetic material to allow sagging and wrinkling skin to occur.

Protecting the skin from free radical damage using anti-oxidant rich foods will promote healthy cells while improving overall skin tone.  Foods that are rich in anti-oxidants are organic dark vegetables, brightly colored fruits, and vegetables, blueberries, goji berries, chocolate, pecans, artichoke, kidney beans, and cranberries are packed full of nutrients.

Common causes of dry skin include stress, insomnia, poor diet, liver exhaustion,  hormonal imbalances, or dehydration not drinking enough pure water. Consuming too much caffeine, tobacco, fried foods, and alcoholic beverages can weaken vein walls causing capillaries to break.  Preventing oxidative changes on a cellular level is one way to promote glowing skin from the inside out using a healthy diet.

Prevent dry skin by using a daily moisturizer or bath oil on a regular basis. Moisture skin after a warm shower massaging a small amount of coconut oil onto damp skin and then drying off with a clean towel.  Hands and feet usually require more attention due to harsh soaps being used.  Coconut oil has been used for centuries for dry skin as well as healthy recipes.  For best results keep in a plastic jar of coconut oil in the bathroom to use as a deep conditioning moisture on the skin. Another jar should be kept in the kitchen for recipes and used in moderation if you are trying to lose weight.  Find coconut oils in your local grocery store or online for an inexpensive luxury moisturizer treatment for your skin.
